Glory of the Wut?

First off, I would like to say I support this change that was posted a few days ago regarding Glory of the Raider and Heroic: Glory of the Raider.

When 3.1 goes live, the rewards for “Glory of the Raider” and “Heroic: Glory of the Raider” are being removed. These achievements will still be active, however, players will no longer receive the Plagued Proto-Drake or Black Proto-Drake for completing them. Similar to our decision to remove the Amani War Bear from Zul’Aman, the goal is to ensure that such mounts retain a degree of rarity in the game; and with raids progressing into Ulduar in patch 3.1, we feel obtaining the rewards for “Glory of the Raider” and “Heroic: Glory of the Raider” would be somewhat trivialized. For this reason we will be offering new fast mounts (310 speed) as rewards for completing select achievements associated with 10 and 25-player Ulduar.

Now, I post that I do not support this change. Wait what? How can I support and not support this change? Well, that is because I am seeing it from both sides. From one standpoint, I can see that this change would make those who have already completed it feel special, if not have their ego inflated even more. That is the only point that I give towards this change though. Sure, the people who have gotten these drakes right now may feel special now that they are going to be exclusive, but think about it Blizzard Devs, won’t they also be the same ones getting the new drakes in Ulduar too?

I am sure I will get an argument that I am just being sore because I have not gotten it so far. I will then argue back that those who think I am sore are the same ones who tried to taunt me because I got my Red Proto Drake the day 3.0.8 came out, instead of before when really the only way to do it was to bug out the encounter in one way shape or form (plus bring no healer!). Oh wow! Glory of the Hero should be nerfed too because Ulduar gear will make them easier, oh no’s! You don’t hear me saying that nor thinking it.

Many of us have a multitude of reasons why we have not gotten the drakes from the raider achievements yet, and I guarantee you that the number one reason is that these various raid groups and guilds have just lacked the dedicated players. My guild alone has recruited some really geared people, only to have them never show up, not even for their first raid. Shit happens in real life. I understand that, but if you are going to commit your time, don’t waste the rest of our time not showing up ever with no notice.

There is also the fact many guilds have not even run 25 mans, and have focused solely on 10 man content. Much of the 10 man content is harder than the 25 man in terms of raw difficulty. Even Sartharion + 3(10) Drakes was meant to be cleared by groups in Naxx(25) and Ulduar(10) gear. Some guilds have managed to down him, using just 10 man gear, but it is few and far in between.

Listen people, this is why we have server first achievements. Everything behind that should be praised, but you are no more special than anyone else. This is why the raider nerf should not happen.

Will I try to get at least one of them completed? Yes

Will I succeed? Unlikely, because I depend on 9/24 other people to show up.

p.s. Those two extra mounts will help a lot to get me closer to 100 mounts obtained.

My primary beef with them removing the drakes from these two achievements is the reasoning behind it.

“…with raids progressing into Ulduar in patch 3.1, we feel obtaining the rewards for “Glory of the Raider” and “Heroic: Glory of the Raider” would be somewhat trivialized.”

    Pardon my French, but *bullshit*.

Gear from Ulduar is not going to make those achievements any easier. Has Blizzard even looked at those achievements? Gear is not the point! Almost every one, from “beat X with less than 20 people” to “do strange thing X while beating Y” to “don’t let anyone die and full-clear Naxx in one raid lockout” depends on one thing: raid coordination.

Ulduar isn’t going to have a raid coordination drop.

I wholeheartedly agree. As I stated, my beef is just getting the people to even show up. It is also imo just a change to make those who will be first in everything already feel more special.

Even when I was on top, I didn’t want special treatment.

Thing is, all the strange Do X While Y achievements or undermanning, are essentially a checklist. Realistically, there are 3 achievements that are part of the Glory of the Raider list that present a ‘bottleneck’ that make it rare and difficult. Those are:

Immortal/Undying – arguably the biggest bottleneck, and the biggest case to be made for not taking the drakes out – this doesn’t get much easier with gear, and the PUNISHING serverlag that plagued most raid groups for 2 months really did make this achievement harder than it should be.

Sartharion 3D – This becomes /substantially/ easier with gear, as the harsh DPS check of getting Shadron down before Twilight Torment becomes in reach of much lower DPS raids/allows raids to stack more healing or tanking at the expense of that DPS. Tank HP also will become inflated thus making buffed breaths easier to thandle.

You Don’t Have an Eternity – 6 minute malygos is a TOTAL gear check. It’s also 100% achievable in game right now, but it does take a raid where everyone can hold their own and where nobody is failing at phase 3. The ’strat’ for it isn’t really anything special, except maybe bringing a DG specced paladin to bubblewall the raid for some extra sparktime in P2. Again, it’s hard to believe that Ulduar gear won’t trivialize this, considering we’re supposed to burn a 35m HP boss like Thorim in under 3 minutes when fully geared.

The other thing to keep in mind about these two drakes is that, like the Gladiator Drakes, they fly at 310% speed. The Glad drakes are a reward for the top 1%, the best of the best – the Plagued/Black protos are meant to be a similar reward for that top few percentage points of the pve game. If they left it in game, 310% mounts would end up being entirely too common, and would lose much of their prestige.

Of course, come October when people start getting the holiday meta achievement, that might become moot. :/

What amuses me is that they AREN’T removing the drake from the Glory of the Hero. Mind you, the Glory of the Raider Achievements WILL be trivial sooner or later (though I don’t think one tier of gear is going to be enough for some of them)… but the Glory of the Hero is ALREADY mostly trivial. Add on Ulduar gear? I think you see what I’m getting at…

I support it’s being removed. I don’t have it, but my guild is getting close.

If we miss it, we’ll try harder in T8. If we get it, it will really felt as if it were earned. Doing these achievements with the intended levels of gear available does make them special. Things like 6min Malygos will be a snooze when we’re all far stronger.

The reason that it’s being removed is so people try to get it. It creates a sense of urgency for guilds that were bored and waiting for Ulduar. A lot of guilds that never even talked about getting this achievement done are now all in a crazy fuss about how to go about getting it done in time.

This is there way of making people care more about achievements. And considering all the buzz this is getting… I think they’re succeeding.

It’s not about making people feel special. It’s about creating a sense of urgency and importance on the achievement system.
