Taking on Responsibility

Razuvious Fight

Razuvious Fight

Recently, I have found myself taking more responsability in my current guild. I am not sure how I feel about this. I mean, I like being asked for my opinions, and actually having my thoughts carried out by guild members. I guess this is how it feels to be a “main tank” of a guild. There are two issues though that I have been fighting tooth and nail with the guild leaders over;  gear requirements, and benchmark requirements.

Currently, we have a few members in the guild who are having a hard time beating -me- in meters on bosses. The image above displayed a WWS of Instructor Razuvious, from the Naxxramas 12-23-2008 (Group B) clear, as I do not have a patchwerk one recent enough to show. Anyways, we can see that we have two dps that are below 1,000. Before I start ripping apart said dps, I take a look into some circumstances. Tae, the Ret Paladin, died when Sibe momentarily lost control of his add, so Razuvious hit him. It is understandable that Tae did low dps.

When we move to Majinga, my stomach fills with ice. He was alive the entire fight, and was able to dps the boss completely. Yet he was still below 1,000 dps. That is completely unacceptable. A fresh rogue in greens can easily hit over that. So, what do I do? I look at his ARMORY. First thing I notice, he has very few achievement points, which means his character is relatively new. Second thing I notice is his stats. He is way below hit cap. Then, looking at his gear, I just jawdrop. Some level 70 epics and quite a few level 80 pvp epics. Wasting itemization points in a raid on resillience? Obviously this rogue is a wannabe pvp jock.

What to do now though. The guild leaders insist that since we do not have choice pick, we have to home grow our dps. I argue back that we will drive away the good dps we have by carrying people. Most of us are really “hardcore” but have been forced to raid late at night due to real life schedules. Despite this, we cannot carry people. Either they need to do heroics while we raid, and gear up, as well as research their class, or we boot them. If no change is made after a certain amount of time, then they prove that they fail at a very easy game (compared to pre-BC!).
Currently, we have 4 active raiders (in 10 mans) that cannot beat me in damage done on patchwerk like bosses. I have stemmed the flow of more coming in, and have done my best to offer resources to the four. So far, very little change has been made. Now, how to trim the fat off this cow.

I would bewary of 2 paths here:

    1. Even posting this stuff on your blog. You have to play with these people and they’ll always, always, always find your blog.

    2. Cutting the fat as you call it. Yes, it’s true that 2 of your dpsers have a lot of work to do, but the reality is that both your DK and hunter in this parse are doing sub-optimal dps as well. So, ask yourself… when do you stop trimming? By the sound of it, Sibe should be trimmed for poor performance on an easy encounter… and the list goes on.

Recruit with high standards, but once someone is within the walls of your guild… work with them and my goodness, don’t post it here. The drama you’ll cause once they find this stuff isn’t worth it… and you may feel like you’re invincible cause you’re the MT and an officer or whatever, but ultimately… you’re not.

    @ven
I appreciate your advice. My main point of this post was to see what other people would do in my place.

    1. I dont mind if they find my blog. These issues are out in the open already.

    2. My standard is pretty low when I consider the whole picture. The Death DK was a pug, the hunter is survival, and sibe is usually dps, but specced tank just for that run. I give a lot of leniency when it comes to how people are performing, as I know there are so many issues.

Problem is, we have tried working with these people and have gotten nothing.

    3. I know I am not invincible. In fact, I am probably the one in the guild with the most precarious position, simply because the amount of tanks on Bonechewer is massive.

I’ll maybe take your suggestion in the future Ven, but right now, I am stuck on ideas on finding a common ground.

To be honest, without looking at the specific parse for the rogue I can’t really tell where he goes wrong but with the gear he has he should be doing well above where he is now.

I think the first thing to consider is that he is Mutilate specced and that it is not an easy “two button smash” play style anymore. There are at least three timers he needs to keep an eye on and make on the spot judgements on what to do, and he might just be trying to find the rhythm of the spec.

A couple of things you can check are:
    1. how many times he had up Slice and Dice and Hunger for Blood in the buffs tab (should be 1 of each which hopefully will indicate he didn’t let either drop)
    2. how the damage he did is divided in terms of white hits, specials and poisons (should be around this distribution: White 35%, Mutilate 22% Instant Poison 18%, Envenom 10%, Rupture 7%, Deadly Poison 7%)
    3. which poisons he uses (should be Deadly MH and Instant OH)

The spec is the correct one.

I wouldn’t worry too much about hit rating, it has lost value with WOTLK for Rogues, I would instead gem Expertise and AP/Ag.

In terms of gear, the PvP items are “not that bad” (with the exception of the trinket obviously). The first upgrades are the daggers, he would be a lot better off to get two Librarian Paper Cutters off the AH; even if the Shanker has better DPS, the LPC is hands down better for the spec, then he just has to grind rep and run heroics.

Hope it help and if you want more in depth comments let me know.

I was told the same thing by another rogue in the guild, who does really well on damage. I then kindly asked that rogue to approach Majinga, and asked Majinga in return to please take some advice from this rogue. He ignored both of us, pretty much. So its become more than a matter of his damage. I will try getting him to listen, again.

Here is the raid parse for the night though. It is a bit messed up since the instance froze for about and hour.

Hehe, glad to be of help, and maybe the next run he’ll do better if he stays specced the way he is at the moment
